Artist Statement:
For my photos I primarily chose to capture close friends of mine. I was not able to go anywhere crowded during the time that I was shooting, and I prefer to take pictures of people that I know anyway. The pictures that I have chosen are pictures that I feel reveal something about the subject. Every person is very complex and multi-faceted, and sometimes a moment can show you a side of a person that comes out only in that instant. Facial expressions were important in my photographs, as well as lighting and setting. I tried to capture people doing something characteristic of them, that showed something of their inner nature. Often times I think that the energy in my photographs was in the characters of the people that I know, and their ways of seeing the world. The settings for the photographs depended really on the places that I went with my camera and my friends. I generally like to take pictures whenever I see the opportunity, rather than going out and “shooting”. I do not think that I approached this project differently with the knowledge that the photos would not be printed.
